Northeast Hurricanes

AccuWeather has a fascinating article on the hurricane exposure the northeastern US is facing (see here), and it is a not-too-difficult jump to imagine the impact on the insurance business.  They also offer a historical perspective by discussing the hurricane of 1938, which came as a complete surprise to residents and inflicted significant damage (see here).  Some questions for insurance agents to consider:

  • Have you recommended flood insurance to your exposed clients?
  • Have you documented the recommendation for flood insurance?
  • Are you prepared to operate your business, and respond to clients, if a major storm or other catastrophe hits your office?

Some questions for underwriters to consider:

  • Have you been disciplined in controlling your property aggregates?
  • Have you considered the impact of a hurricane on other lines of business?
  • Are you prepared to operate your business, and respond to clients, if a major storm or other catastrophe hits your office?

Unfortunately, the best disaster planning occurs after the disaster.  (See here and here for disaster planning information.)
