A different topic in this post. I had an interesting intersection on the topic of startup management: I was on a call yesterday with a few investors in an early stage medtech company, and subsequently read a great article directly on point.
The article, How to Hire by Vinod Khosla, talks about the characteristics required for senior management at a startup and how those characteristics differ from those required for a more mature company. The most important recommendation is to focus on candidates who will excel at value creation, vs value protection, at the early stages of a startup's journey.
The call topic centered on the management team not fitting the company's stage. The founder is accomplished in the field and highly technical. Unfortunately, none of the management team is experienced in go to market, and they do not acknowledge their lack of experience. The team does not know how to assess market risks and opportunities, and does not know what to do next. So the company is stalled at a critical point.
Whether you are a startup investor or founder, the article should provide valuable perspective on startup team formation.
